Just days after completing a marathon, a group of runners from Oswestry have pledged to finish the race in memory of a Masterchef contestant who died 3.7 miles short of the finish.

Organised by runner Jody Wilson, around 50 to 60 runners will be meeting at The Highwayman in Oswestry on Thursday to finish the marathon for Matt Campbell, who died aged 29 on Sunday after he collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark of the race.

Jody, who took part in the London Marathon himself, said conditions on the day were awful.

"It was brutal," said Jody.

"This is the sixth marathon I've done and this was the worst by far.

"Around 800 people didn't finish, and 100 of them were hospitalised."

This is not the first time that Jody has organised to finish the marathon for another person.

In 2016 Jody, alongside many others, ran for Captain David Seath who suffered a cardiac arrest at mile 23 and later passed away. The runners raised £500 for Help the Heroes, on top of the money they had raised for their respective charities.

As the industrial estate is 1.9 miles corner to corner, Jody and his fellow runners will be running twice round and finish the 3.7 miles Matt still had to go.

"I know we are all in pain and recovering from Sunday but if anyone fancies coming, whether you ran Sunday or not then you are more that welcome to join me," continued Jody.

"There will be collection buckets on the night for people to give money to Matt's charity The Brathay Trust, which aims to inspire vulnerable young people to make positive changes in their lives."

The Highwayman has also agreed to put on pizza and refreshments at the end of the run for those taking part.

If you are interested in taking part in the run, Jody and fellow runners will be meeting at the car park of The Highwayman in Oswestry at 7pm on Thursday, April 25 with the race to begin at 7.30pm.
