Oswestry residents say they are feeling "cut out" after an Arriva bus route was changed.

The company announced at the end of January the number 70 bus which travels from Oswestry to Shrewsbury would cut out Cabin Lane and use Unicorn Road instead.

The change resulted in many residents in Cabin Lane being left in the dark after they were informed of the change via a poster in buses containing a link to a website.

One resident told the Advertizer: "Not everyone has access to a computer to find the information on the website – I have seen elderly residents waiting in Cabin Lane because they didn't know about the changes.

"I have been in contact with Arriva buses and they told me that buses going down Cabin Lane were getting damaged going over speed bumps and passenger numbers were low.

"But there are other Arriva buses that use Cabin Lane so it's a little confusing."

The resident told us how Unicorn Road drops are particularly dangerous because of cars parking in the bus stop, forcing passengers to walk out in the road to flag the transport down.

"Arriva said that passengers from Cabin Lane could walk to Unicorn Road through the playing fields, but we don't want our children or elderly neighbours doing that in the dark."

The resident added: "Cabin Lane is one of the longest roads in Oswestry, it seems ridiculous that no buses would go that way.

"We feel like we've been completely cut out."

James Willocks, Shropshire Council’s transport commissioning manager, said: “The 70 bus service is commercially operated by Arriva and so not one that Shropshire Council have any contractual influence over. However, we will raise this with Arriva for their consideration.”
