Women will not be able to give birth at Oswestry Maternity Unit until Saturday morning after health bosses temporarily suspended services.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust (SaTH) confirmed this afternoon that the midwife-led unit based at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen would be suspended from 7.30pm today until 7.30am on Saturday morning.

Anthea Gregory-Page, deputy head of Midwifery at SaTH, said all women potentially affected by the suspension were being contacted.

She continued: “Due to on-going issues which led to the suspension of services at Oswestry MLU earlier this week, it will unfortunately be necessary to suspend services again from 7.30pm tonight until 7.30am on Saturday.

"We are contacted any women who could be affected by the suspension of services, and I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Women booked to give birth at Oswestry MLU who go into labour during the temporary suspension of services will be offered a birth at another MLU or the consultant-led unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

If any women due to give birth at Oswestry MLU require support during this time they will be able to access a midwife.
