North Shropshire College (NSC) Commercial Services students recently held their annual skills show at the Oswestry Campus.

Each year, the event attracts members of the general public, friends and families of the students to join together for a great charity evening. This year the event raised £430 for the local not-for-profit enterprise, CHALK. A local community interest company which aims to help the homeless individuals in the town.

The theme for this years’ performance included a variation of Zodiac signs, fantasy creations and horror formations. The show allowed the hair and beauty students to show off their practical skills learnt whilst on the course over the academic year. NSC’s professional cookery students catered for the event attendees with a mouth-watering afternoon tea and Curtis Metcalfe, a Level three professional cookery student, demonstrated the preparation techniques of a “chicken ballotine”. Guests were also treated to a floristry demonstration themed around “Easter” time and live music from staff and students which created a great atmosphere for the evening.

Commercial services curriculum area manager, Sharon Cooper said: “The show was a huge success, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. I would like to thank the students for their hard work, and for putting so much effort into researching and creating their costumes. We hope that we can build on the success of the show in the future.”

Curtis, whose cookery demonstration enthralled audience members during the evening, added: “I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to demonstrate my skills to such a large crowd. It has given me invaluable and realistic experience, and a chance to put into practice the elements of my course that I have been studying this year.”
