There were early Easter celebrations at Adcote School as pupils and staff marked a clutch of sporting championship title wins in quick succession.

The independent girls’ school at Little Ness has just bagged two back-to-back hockey championship titles hot on the heels of Midland success in gymnastics.

The school’s under-11s hockey squad won their first ever championship title when they beat off rivals to come out top at the U11s Shropshire Schools Hockey Championship held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The championship win has qualified the team to represent Shropshire and compete in the Midlands Schools regional tournament on Friday, April 20 at Cannock Hockey Club.

Days later the school’s U13s squad netted a second hockey title and became North Shropshire Hockey champions in a hotly contested tournament.

Many of the girls in the squad are double title winners as they are also already North Shropshire netball champions.

The hockey success comes only weeks after Adcote gymnasts made a sweep of nearly all the top medals in team and individual events at the 15th Independent Schools Association National Gymnastics Championships held at the school last month.

Headteacher Diane Browne said that for a small school it was a phenomenal achievement.

“We are a very small school in comparison to many others but we are able to punch above our weight and produce some fantastic team and individual performances and very able young sportswomen,” she said.

“We are fortunate to have a team of excellent sports coaches and are extremely proud of our girls who show courage and character.”
