A DRIVER was clocked at an astonishing 68mph in a 30mph zone, at mid-afternoon near a primary school during a survey last year.

The figures, recorded by speed sensitive signage placed outside Bryn Offa Primary School on the A483 near Llanymynech, were collated during a three month period in 2017.

And they were not alone, as other drivers were recorded in excess of 60mph during the day, another motorist clocking 64mph as the schools were closing heading towards Oswestry from Welshpool.

An astonishing 94,833 speeding drivers were recorded by the devices during the survey period, an average of over 31,000 per month. Of those 742 were driving in excess of 50mph.

The fastest speed registered in a 30mph zone last year was in Dundee, where a driver was clocked at 106mph. A driver in West Yorkshire was clocked at 160mph in a 70mph zone.

Drivers caught breaking the limit by more than 20mph in a 20mph or 30mph zone face fines of between 125 per cent and 175 per cent of their weekly income.

Breaking the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions were factors in crashes that caused 17,832 casualties in 2017.
