The latest edition of a booklet containing historic articles has been released.
Deryn Poppitt, from Chirk, has created ‘Llangollen 1918’, which contains old Advertizer articles about the town.
It’s the first booklet which covers Llangollen related newspaper articles from past years. The reader will discover articles describing dances, concerts, anniversaries, thefts, inquest reports, council meetings, schools, presentation’s, deaths, military tribunals, weddings, court cases, appointments, lectures, obituaries and property sales among others.
A substantial part of the articles also concentrate on war news from ‘The Front’ as well as highlighting what the local inhabitants of Llangollen did themselves to support the war effort. Many of the articles are moving tributes to the men of Llangollen who laid down their lives for ‘King and Country’.
Deryn said: “This booklet happened by accident. I am at present, with local Chirk historian Graham Greasley, compiling a book to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. This was solely to cover the Parish of Chirk between 1914-18, as a tribute to the men of Chirk who made the ultimate sacrifice. Searching through past copies of the Oswestry Advertizer, unearthed far more information concerning Llangollen, than Chirk.”
Apart from printing costs all proceeds from this booklet will be donated directly to Llangollen Museum where its available for sale. They are also available at Chirk library and Millennium Hairdressers, Chirk. The 40 page booklets are priced at £2.50.
