An attacker said something to a profoundly deaf man then punched him when he did not get a reply.
His victim was walking through an underpass between the two sections of Crouch Street in Colchester when the assault happened.
The unprovoked late-night attack left the man traumatised, with cuts and grazes to his head which needed medical treatment.
Police today appealed for witnesses to come forward and help them catch the person responsible, who ran off towards the town centre.
The attacker was described as white, thin, about 5ft 9ins tall, in his mid to late 20s, with shaved hair, wearing dark trousers, a jacket and possibly a hat.
Anyone with information about the assault, at about 10pm yesterday , should call police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
