Yossi Gliksman the Chairman of Oswestry Chamber of Commerce said that re-introducing free parking on some streets could persuade people to use the town's small traders instead of buying everything on a single visit to the supermarket.
Parking for 40 minutes on Leg Street and Cross Street, would help Oswestry to retain its collection of small specialist shops which are the life and soul of the town, Mr Gliksman predicted.
"Cross Street is no use whatsoever as it is. We might as well open it up and have parking down one side. That will encourage people to pop into Oswestry and buy bits and pieces," he said.
He refused to blame ParkRight for the lack of available parking in Oswestry despite the fearsome reputation the company had established for ruthless enforcement of traffic regulations.
Local businessman Martin Britten said that the attitude of the parking enforcers had played a part in his decision to merge his two shops into the Clubhouse on Leg Street, leading to the loss of three jobs at the Bailey Street premises on July 26.
Garage owner Keith Jones said customers were very nervous about being booked when the pulled up outside the K. C. Jones car sales premises in Oak Street.
He said the standard policy of enforcing the regulations to the letter would turn Oswestry into a ghost town.
