Council slated over plans
A STORM of criticism stung members of Oswestry Town Council last week as around 20 members of the public laid into the council over its proposals to develop part of the site at The Smithfield into a food store and cinema complex.
The annual town council meeting had proceeded in its sedate way through the agenda until the final item was reached - public questions.
Then the whirlwind struck and raged around the chamber for the next 40 minutes.
Mrs Wendy Clewes opened for the opposition saying the development, which includes a 60,000 sq ft store, would be a triumph for uniformity over the town's market heritage.
"Is Oswestry going to be a market town, a small town with shops, or is it trying to copy the bigger towns which would spell the end for shops in the town centre?," she asked.
"Surely we want to keep Oswestry different. I think that the scheme that is being promoted is going the wrong way," she explained.
Other members of the public pointed out that there were lots of Oswestry shops closed already and this development would make matters worse.
