OLIVER Townend has vowed not to rest until he has reclaimed his Burghley Horse Trials crown after missing out on a place in the history books.
Townend, on board Carousel Quest, was looking to become the first rider to retain the three-day eventing title with the same horse, but despite lying second heading into the final day, the pair picked up eight penalty points to finish fourth.
"It would have been a dream come true to win Burghley two years running, but that's horses," said Townend.
"He hasn't been particularly consistent in the past, he has had some clear rounds but has had some rails down on the third day in the past. I'm still really pleased with the result, so credit to my team to get the horse here, hopefully we can come back next year and push for the win again," he added.
The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is the penultimate event in the HSBC FEI Classics, the five four-star competitions which unite the top end of the international eventing circuit.
