ATHERTONS Rachel and Gee have stormed to victory in the final downhill mountainbike World Cup event in New York, where Gee took the win and lifted the overall world series title for the first time, while Rachel marked her return from injury.
Around 12,000 packed the mountain to see Gee Atherton take home the men's gold with a time of 2mins 28.28secs, while sister, Rachel Atherton, capturing the women's crown with a run of 2mins 49.85secs.
The men's overall competition had been down to two riders Gee Atherton and Greg Minnaar, with Atherton sealed the world title by winning the race just 37 hundredths of a second in front of Minnaar.
After months plagued with injury, the win for Rachel marked a triumphant return to form and will have been welcomed by the pair's brother and fellow international rider Dan injured last month in a training crash.
