CHRIS Sharp’s hat-trick made the headlines amidst a feast of goals in a match that signalled the start of The New Saints’ bid to retain their Welsh Premier League title.

They announced their intent on the opening night of the ‘Super 12s’ by hammering five past visiting Seasiders, Prestatyn Town, at Park Hall on Friday.

Fans gave a warm welcome to a the side currently making history on their European adventures, and the team put on another display of first class football with Craig Jones and Danny Holmes also getting on the score sheet, whilst Lee Hunt’s brace proved a mere consolation for the visitors.

“I’m pleased with the result. It’s a good statement and a great start for us,” said Saints boss, Mike Davies.

“We have created a lot of chances and Sharpy has got a great hat-trick so he can be pleased with that.

“Chris Seargeant had his chance tonight and took it really well and I’m delighted for him because he’s worked really hard in pre-season.

“But teams in this league will punish you for mistakes. Prestatyn are a good side but the goals we conceded were a bit sloppy, so we will have to build on this performance.”
