Irene accepts a cheque from Scott Quinnell

FORMER Wales and British Lions rugby star Scott Quinnell made a special delivery to families in Abergele.

Four people received a nice cash boost as part of the People’s Postcode Lottery which dished out a pot of £5,000 to people in Abergele and Pensarn.

The rugby star who played for the Llanelli Scarlets and was the son of Welsh rugby legend and radio presenter Derek Quinnell passed on the winnings to the lucky four.

Bob Chalmers, 72, was the first to receive a visit from Scott and was delighted with his cheque for £2,500.

Mr Chalmers said: “I am really pleased about the prize. I was actually thinking about cancelling the tickets last week, but I didn’t and I’m very glad about that.”

He suffered a stroke a few months ago and said that the money would go towards an electric wheelchair and making it easier to get around his home.

Irene Doherty, 57, who is a full time carer for her father received £834.

She said: “It’s fantastic. I have only been playing for about four weeks. I don’t know what I’m going to do with the money yet. My son’s just got married and my daughter has just had a baby - I think I’ll put it in the bank for the future.”

Carol Williams, 48, who has lived in Abergele all her life, said that her family had not planned on having a holiday this year but that the prize money meant they could now enjoy a break.

Wyn Roberts, 66 and retired, said that the £834 winnings had come just in time, as he and his wife Lynda, a nurse in Colwyn Bay, had booked a cruise.

He said: “It’s lovely. Just the job. I’ll take my wife out for a drink with this!”

Postcode Lottery Players purchase a lottery ticket, which enters them into the weekly draw.

If their postcode sector is drawn then all of the players in an area receive part of the prize money. Out of the ticket money, 40p goes directly to charity.

Scott Quinnell, who works as a TV sports pundit after retiring from professional rugby and supports youngsters with learning difficulties, said that giving out the prizes was the “one of the best jobs in the world”.
