CLASSICAL music lovers and fans of West End shows will be treated to a packed programme at this year’s Gwyl Gobaith festival and here the Leader takes a look at the line-up.
Rhys Meirion and the organisers of Gwyl Gobaith 2010 have been astounded at the support from performers for this year’s festival.
Stars from both stage and screen will be appearing at the event, held at Deeside College’s Northop campus on the weekend of June 25, 26 and 27.
Friday night will be Choirs in the Park where traditional Welsh choirs will be joined by international ensembles to present an evening of the best choral singing to North Wales.
Voices of the Valley stars The Fron Male Voice Choir will perform, along with National Eisteddfod winners Maelgwm Male Voice Choir, Last Choir Standing runners up, the sensational Cor Ysgol Glanaethwy, and the world-famous London Community Gospel Choir.
Soloists will be Ann Atkinson and Mirain Haf.
Cor Ysgol Pen Barras and Cor Ysgol Glan Clwyd, together with Northop Silver Band and Piantel, should make this an unforgettable evening of music.
Saturday will be West End Musicals Night with Peter Karrie joined on stage by The Westenders with musical director Jae Alexander and the John Quirk band along with Cor Ysgol Glanaethwy.
Karrie’s voice has been showcased in many of the greatest successes in contemporary musical theatre, the highlight of which must be his performance in
The Phantom of The Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking show.
He first played the role of the Phantom at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London, going on to perform in Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong and Vancouver.
His performances have been described as definitive and have earned him the title of “the world’s most popular Phantom”, pushing Michael Crawford into third place.
Lord Lloyd Webber and Cameron Macintosh have continually asked him to return.
Popular vocalist Tom Spence and The Point of Ayr Silver Band and River City Jazz will also entertain.
The Westenders are talented performers who have appeared in more than 20 popular West End shows in the past decade, including Beauty and the Beast, Miss Saigon and Oliver. Annette Bryn Parri and Dylan Cernyw will perform duets of piano and harp music.
Sunday brings Classic Night, with three international opera singers, Rhys Meirion (tenor), David Kempster (baritone) and Shan Cothi (soprano), and renowned international pianist Llyr Williams joining the London International Orchestra. The famous Cor Godre’r Aran will also perform.
There will be a special guest appearance by the Three Welsh Tenors, plus Ewloe Green School Choir, Cor Ysgol Glanrafon and the Michael Reynolds Jazz Duo.
The Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers will give a rousing start to the evening’s entertainment.
A highlight of the evening will be a fly past by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to the accompaniment of 662 Squadron by the orchestra. All concerts will culminate in a spectacular firework display.
