OSWESTRY21 campaigner, Jessie Miller, cited the strength of feeling in the town as around 350 people marched through Oswestry to protest against supermarket proposals on Saturday.

A coalition of OS21, Oswestry Chamber of Trade, The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, and The Oswestry and District Civic Society have been spearheading a campaign to oppose the introduction of a new supermarket which they say will damage existing traders.

And with Shropshire Council meeting on March 18 to indentify which of the four proposals will get the go ahead, the coalition is receiving plenty of support to ensure that their voice is heard ahead of the imminent decision, which could include a state of the art 3D cinema and provide 350 jobs.

“The march really did show the strength of feeling on the issue,” said Miss Miller. “We were thrilled that there was such a good turn out, there were around 350 of us at the start but the number grew to about 400 as we went through the town.

“People had come from Gobowen and even Wrexham to support us, and they brought some great placards and banners too.”

The coalition will make a presentation to Shropshire Council at the forthcoming meeting to be held at the Lion Quays Hotel.
