OSWESTRY can now claim to have produced its first ever Oscar nominee.
Jesse Armstrong has been nominated for this year’s Academy Awards, which take place on March 7, in the category of Writing (adapted screenplay)
The writer, pictured, who was born and raised in Oswestry and is best known for Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show, has been nominated alongside Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche for his part in writing political satire In the Loop, released last year.
The film is a spin-off from the BBC television comedy series The Thick of It, which Jesse also co-wrote.
Jesse’s father, David, lives in Oswestry and is also a writer who has released several novels.
David said: “I’m incredibly proud of Jesse’s work and achievements.
“A lot of writers, if they were given a rough outline, could come up with something half-decent on almost any theme, but in the case of In The Loop, which sprung from the brilliant BBC series The Thick of It, there are very few practitioners with both the inside knowledge (Jesse was a Labour Party researcher before he decided to become a writer) and the talent to fashion a screenplay this bitingly funny and incisive.”
Jesse has also worked on Chris Morris’ forthcoming terrorism satire Four Lions, which was recently premiered at the Sundance FIlm Festival.
