MEMBERS of Chirk’s Town Council were shocked last week to learn that discussions to set up a travellers’ site at Halton are being held by Wrexham County Borough Council.
Revealing the information to his fellow councillors, local Wrexham County Borough Councillor Ian Roberts said: “In the near future, there are going to be proposals to site a travellers’ site off the Halton roundabout. I think we have got quite a bit of work to do there.
“It is not a suitable site and it should not be done.
“At the moment we just seem to be getting everything,” Cllr Roberts added.
He told members that the site was taken out of the local development plan around five years ago and is best used as an industrial site, like its neighbour, the McDonald’s site.
“It has to be one of the most valuable sites in Wrexham County Borough, it is a positive goldmine.
“We all need to be shouting about it, that land would be better used as industrial than a travellers’ site.”
Council Chairman, Cllr Hilary Spragg said: “It is certainly an issue that we will be interested in hearing more about.”
Wrexham County Borough Council was expected to discuss the issue further at its meeting last night (Monday.)
Councillor David Richards raised his concerns, saying: “They (Wrexham County Borough Council) have taken stuff away from us because ‘it is not this and it is not that’, yet they are going to let travellers in?
“I agree with Cllr Roberts, I think enough is enough,” he added.
Cllr Roberts replied: “It is almost as if it is a fait accompli, I don’t know what we can do to change the development plan.
“With everything we have been working on we did not see this coming,” he added.
