Protesters to attend Wrexham-Cheshire cross-border strategy meeting

CAMPAIGNERS who threatened to boycott a key meeting over a plan for Wrexham to co-operate more closely with its English neighbours have decided they will go along after all.

Members of the People’s Council for North Wales (PCNW) spent six months gathering more than 15,000 signatures for their petition demanding the region’s withdrawal from the West Cheshire/North East Wales Sub-Regional Strategy.

Already supported by a number of local councils including Wrexham, the strategy calls for closer cross-border ties with Cheshire on major planning and economic issues.

But PCNW is bitterly opposed to the strategy, branding it “ill thought-out, extremely damaging and subversive”.

The petition organised by the group is now being considered by the Assembly’s petitions committee whose members will meet in public at Glyndwr University next Monday morning to discuss it.

PCNW at first welcomed the chance to have a proper say on the plan. But the group then learned that evidence will also be taken from the Mersey Dee Alliance, the grouping which supports the plan.

Earlier this week, PCNW leader Pol Wong said members were so angry about this they were considering boycotting the meeting in protest.

But at their own meeting on Tuesday night, PCNW members voted to attend the meeting after all.

Mr Wong said: “The fact that North East Wales is intent on building at least 20,000 houses aimed at attracting inward migration from Cheshire and Merseyside without any concerns about the increased pressure on our quality of life in North Wales is incredible.”

The committee’s session begins at 9.30am on Monday in the university’s Catrin Finch Centre, with members of the public invited to attend.

The fact that evidence will be taken from the Mersey Dee Alliance in no way precludes the PCNW from attending and putting forward a properly argued and coherent case for opposition....provided, of course, they're capable of doing so.

This meeting is just show, the deal has already been set in concrete...complete waste of money...too much money has been spent for this not to go ahead.

However 'Late in the day' something still has to be done. 11th hour or not there can be no passage given for the taking of land to the benefit and profit of those who have overfilled their original spaces. " When in Rome" that means "Respect the people of Wales and don't bring any more rubbish here to Hafod with you"

Are there any proper reasons why this shouldn't go ahead or is it just nationalism?

  5. Posted by: yachydda at 15:52 on 29 January 2010 Report

Roland Cleth : I suppose nationalism is part of the objection, but its not just that. Its mainly the underhanded way in which governments manouver boundaries and land to appease the industrial needs that cannot get planning permission in other overcrowded areas... Merseyside, north east Cheshire... north wales is the nearest obvious solution.

Speaking of underhand ways and means.... has anybody seen or are minutes of the Mersey/Dee Alliance meetings being kept or open to public scrutiny

Does Roland Cleth really believe the PCNW would go to all this trouble if they didn't have a case? They are not the ones who are trying to sneak plans through without first consulting the public. I agree with Wraigsam, "Respect the people of Wales". I respect the PCNW for having the guts to stand up against this plan and for putting us in the picture.

Along with the petition they will need documented edvidence of the claims they have made... Councils have the legal advice at their finger tips and won't hesitate to use it.... also it may have been wiser to submit the petition after the election as a change of Govt may make it easier to demand rights for locals

Well said Roland, at least lets have a fair debate on the issue, thus far all i have heard is the pcnw side claiming how damaging it is going to be. Yachydda, in an earlier story you said wales has lost a 1/3 of its land due to boundary changes, please provide some evidence of this extraordinary claim

Yes G Boycott, you can thank the PCNW for exposing the scheme for West Cheshire and North East Wales which would have been as secret as Bletchley if MDA had their way. Ditto for minutes A Cahill.

Perhaps the PCNW will take over from Plaid who, since sniffing power in the Assembly have really proven that they are little more than glorified New Labour. One of Plaids career politicians will be standing for parliament this years(Janet Ryder),I hope the PCNW put someone up against her.I think Wales should be represented by Welsh people and not ex Geordies

I heard John Marek was thinking of standing again.I would vote for him,he isn't perfect but at least he would be independent and not dictated to by a right wing party machine like New Labour Plaid LibDems or the Tories.

jimsquires... I hope so.....Tommy.... I hope so.....more choice the better informed we will be and the less likely that the spin of the major parties will go unchallenged

Oh dear, tommy is jumping on the nationalist bandwagon now it suits him. Why don't you stand, you seem to be full of BS ideas. Try starting with your views on our soldiers, some are welsh after all.

Hi Geoff, What party do you belong to then(C'mon give us a smile)

Protesters.. pffft. The Aston Hill development was cancelled because of them, and now thousands of people have to suffer because of a few dozen NIMBYs. Not for the cross border malarky myself, but I'm just saying that the vocal people are usually the minority, which is an unfortunate guideline which leads to them being ignored.
