REVIEW: The Deadlight Spiral

NORTH Wales band The Deadlight Spiral are looking to bring back the rock with their new self-titled release.

Offering undiluted stoner-rock which brings forth a tinge of early Soundgarden with a modern twist; the six track album skilfully captures the raw enjoyment of the hard-gigging band.

"I looked into its deadlights and I wanted to be there," quotes the sound-bite from Stephen King's It ahead of opening track Inferior? before flanged guitar and running bass slowly ramp.

After drawing the listener in with fretboard-frolicking riffs, the distortion kicks in as Daryl Roddick's controlled vocals burst into life.

The energy continues with After Hours as Al Matthews' varied drum work rides over the catchy chorus before Disposable Promises shows even darker shades of hard rock.

The Deadlight Spiral's penchant for brain-burrowing riffs is just as prevalent in this tidy release, no more demonstrated than in the headbang-able Deadlock.

And Rob Loughlin is given a chance to shine in the bass-led Temptress which doesn't fail to impress as one of the album's highlights.

Closing the release is a re-recording of Permanent Vacation, clearly illustrating the polished edge the band have developed since their Full Circle EP.

The Deadlight Spiral have already established themselves as a favourite on the North Wales music scene, and their latest CD demonstrates why.

Melding intricate guitar-play, thrusting beats and confident bass-work - all brought together by accomplished vocals with classic rock delivery - the result is an aural assault of the best kind.

If you like your 90's grunge beaten into shape by a Noughties stick, don't miss The Deadlight Spiral.
