Dwindling grit supplies shut Glyndwr University for another week

GLYNDWR University is to remain closed for a further week because its grit supplies have been limited during the cold weather.

Exams which were scheduled at the university for this week have had to be moved and the start of the new term has been suspended for a week until Monday.

A statement released by the university said: “Glyndwr University has suspended the start of the new term for a week as its reserves of grit have been exhausted.

“University officials are now working to minimise the impact this delay will have on the rest of the academic year.

“The university’s problems have arisen because replacement grit supplies, ordered before the start of the cold snap, have now been diverted to local authorities and the region’s hospitals as the whole of the UK runs short of salt and sand.

“As the university has exhausted its existing supplies, it is no longer in a position to guarantee the safety of either the Wrexham or Northop campuses.

“It has reluctantly therefore decided to delay the new term by a week.

“The effects of the adverse weather conditions are likely to last for so
me time.

“Arrangements are now being made for the rescheduling of exams originally intended to be held next week.”

The university will also remain closed to staff today Monday, January 11.

  • Glyndwr University's Northop Hall campus is also to remain closed for a further week.

No wonder there isnt enough grit for roads etc. I live near someone who works for Wrexham council and have just witnessed them arriving home in their car, opening the boot and shovelling out grit over their drive and path!!
