Witnesses left shocked after major vehicle fire in Oswestry

Residents in the area were concerned after a campervan caught fire leaving the Oak Street area covered in smoke.

The fire which broke out on Friday morning (July 25) left a pillar of smoke hanging over the Castlefields area.

Officers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Mercia Police were both called to the scene.

The stationary campervan near to the home of OsNosh at the Centre on Oak Street blocked the entrance to a nearby car park.

On arrival at the scene firefighters found that the campervan was "fully involved and destroyed by fire" and that a propane tank was in the vehicle.

Fire crews also had to tackle the fire as it spread to nearby vehicles.

Smoke from the  fire could be smelt across the town with people as far away as the other side of Cae Glas Park reporting that they were affected.

Witnesses said that the fire was “all under control” and unconfirmed reported that “thankfully no one was hurt”.

Pictures from the aftermath of the fire show that the vehicle had been completely destroyed by the fire.

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 9.56am on Friday, July 25, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control received a call reporting a fire classified as car fire in Oswestry.

"One fire appliance was mobilised from Ellesmere.

Firefighters tackle the fire in Oak Street (Image: Graham Mitchell) "One campervan fully involved and destroyed by fire including one propane cylinder. One car also affected by fire with superficial burning due to heat from campervan.

"Crews used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and cool the propane cylinder.

"Crews also used a ground monitor to prevent re-ignition and a thermal imaging camera in use to check temperatures."

West Mercia Police have confirmed that their officers were in attendance to close off the road.
