A SOCIAL housing development by Grŵp Cynefin housing association, delivered by a Ceiriog Valley-based construction company has won a prestigious UK-wide award.

The Llety’r Adar housing scheme in Bethesda, Gwynedd, took the Best Small Social Housing Development Award at the Local Authority Building Control Excellence Awards over the weekend.

Built by Gareth Morris Construction, the scheme on the Hen Orsaf site was a partnership between Grŵp Cynefin and Cyngor Gwynedd, with a social housing grant from the Welsh Government.

Mel Evans, interim chief executive at Grŵp Cynefin said they were delighted to take home the win.

“This is great news and congratulations to everybody involved,” he said.

Llety’r Adar was developed to respond to a need for social housing for local people, and we worked closely with the community to make sure that what we were building suited that need.

“The whole project is a great example of what can be achieved when partnerships are forged for the benefit of the local area, and the collaboration between Cyngor Gwynedd, Gareth Morris Construction and us has been great.

“Well done to all involved.”

More than 900 leading construction industry figures attended the LABC Excellence Awards in London, to celebrate best practice, quality, and exemplary standards in construction.

The awards focus on professional skills and competence, as well as exemplar projects.

Also a key part of the project were three other Welsh companies, Flintshire’s Ainsley Gommon Architects, construction agents Wakemans of Caernarfon and Datrys Engineers from Caernarfon.

The site, completed last year, includes eight two-bedroom properties, five two-bedroom bungalows, three three-bedroom houses and one four-bedroom home.

Dylan Wyn Jones, operations manager at Gareth Morris Construction, added: “The incredible achievement of this national award is testament to the high level of focus, commitment and collaboration that was given by the whole project team.

“A big thank you to everyone involved for their contribution to this amazing success.

“Additionally, Dewi Hughes from GMC was also a finalist for the ‘Site Manager of the Year’ award for a separate project, so all in all a great night for GMC and the Welsh construction business.”

Lorna Stimpson, LABC chief executive, added: “I firmly believe that one of the best ways to see more good work is to praise building excellence and publicly acknowledge companies, designers, site managers and tradespeople who go that extra mile.”
