A BUDDING tennis star who trains at Ellesmere College Tennis Academy is set to leave Shropshire for an American University scholarship.

Jemimah Choi, who plays tennis for Wales and perfects her game in Ellesmere, is heading to Tiffin University in Ohio this summer on a tennis scholarship, just months after gaining world ranking points.

The 18-year-old from Wrexham has just become International Tennis Federation (ITF) world ranked after gaining enough points while also studying for A Levels.

Head of the Academy Stephen Welti said she will be greatly missed.

He added: “Jemimah has spent two years on the tennis programme here at Ellesmere after joining us from Wrexham Tennis Centre.

“She made an impact here as soon as she joined – she added depth to our team and was already a good player, but she is infinitely better now.

“Becoming ITF world ranked will give her an advantage when she tries to compete in America.”

Thanks to this, Jemimah will have a good advantage for improving her tennis in America while completing a foundation placement year before deciding which type of sport management to specialise in.

Jemimah has helped out with social tennis nights teaching both staff and parents at Ellesmere College.

Mr Welti added: “She has been popular amongst the staff here who have tried to learn tennis and the entire Tennis Academy will miss her very much.

Jemimah is expecting good results for her BTEC in sport this summer but will be able to go to Tiffin University no matter what they are.

She found the place by Tennis Smart, a company which specialises in finding placements at universities for tennis players.

Before she leaves, peers, teachers and friends gathered to present Jemimah with a card and gift for her future in America and to thank her for her contribution to social tennis this year.
