CHIRK Library is set for a week filled with celebrations as its prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary next week.

The library was opened on May 17, 1973, by county librarian, E.R. Luke, in what was a new purpose-built base in Chapel Lane.

Since then the library has been keeping up with the latest technological improvements.

OTHER NEWS:

Staff member, Carolin Meredith, has been with the institution for 25 years and said she can definitely see the changes throughout the years.

She added: “It’s changed a lot and for the better– for example we weren’t computerised when I started here.

“People are still interested in physical copies of the books, more so than the digital copies.”

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the staff are busy planning special activities to celebrate the growth and development of the service.

Carolin continued: “It’s quite busy, we have a lot to do, but it will definitely be worth it.”

The celebrations will start on Monday, May 15, with a visit by children’s author and textile poet Rachel Harris and the celebrations will continue throughout the week with craft activities and history sessions for children and adults.

On Tuesday, the library will welcome crafter Emily Ashworth for a special ‘Making Paper Flowers’ session.

Carolin said: “We are closed on Wednesday so we are going to recover for the party to come in full swing on Thursday.”

On Thursday, the library will celebrate the anniversary with refreshments and an open day where several local organisations will be on hand to advise customers and residents of services which could benefit them.
