BoomTown 2016: Interview with The Inexplicables

Reporter:

Jessica Needham

The Inexplicables defy explanation.

Rooted in Bristol, their unique blend of live dance music oozes energy and originality.

Driven by beatbox, with sumptuous vocals, tricky wordplay, raw bass and uplifting sax melodies; taking you on a visceral journey through reggae, hiphop and roots to jungle, drum 'n' bass and jazz.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Hobaps from The Inexplicables as the band prepare for Boomtown as part of their busy 2016 summer tour

On a scale of 1-10 how excited are you to play Boomtown this year?

10

Can you tell us a bit about The Inexplicables?

We are a band from Bristol who make live dance music bringing elements of Hip Hop, Reggae, Drum n Bass, Jazz and Roots

How did you guys meet?

I have known beatboxer and guitarist Jack since I was 2 having grown up in Wales together. Jack moved down to Bristol and met the other guys through the Bristol music scene and I came down and was the last addition.

What's the best thing about being in a band?

Being able to make music with friends and making people smile, hopefully!

What's your main highlight of The Inexplicables performances so far?

Too many to mention!

Have you played at boomtown before?

Yes we have played the last 3 years, and I have also played 4 years ago with Major Triadz

How would you describe to our readers what boomtown is all about? What can we expect from your set?

A pop up musical city with a surprise around ever corner with one of the highest concentrations of amazing music in the universe!

So what have you been up to this year so far in terms of music?

We released our second LP 'Proper Gander' https://theinexplicables.bandcamp.com/ earlier this year, with some new video releases. We toured that album around the UK in the spring before beginning our summer festival circuit.

How would you describe your musical style?

Inexplicable, of course!

How did you get into music?

Personally through my love for Hip Hop, especially the vocal aspect. Fell in love with the art of the written word through rhyme. This developed into my first group Major Triadz and then evolved into other projects, including The Inexplicables.

Who are you main musical inspirations?

I cant speak for the rest of the band, and there is way to much to mention as everything can inspire in some way or another, but some that spring to mind are: Wu Tang, Sole, Buck 65, Sage Francis, Sixtoo, Stand High Patrol.

Did you always want to be in the music industry?

That is a difficult question to answer as long as the music industry wants us I guess!

What festies are you performing at this year?

Boomtown of course, Elements, Audio Soup in Scotland, Mandrea in Italy, Fuego De La Isla in Germany. There are lots more but those ones are the ones I'm probably most looking forward to.

What was the first album you ever bought?

I think it was probably Paul's Boutique by The Beastie Boys – classic!

What's your all time favourite tune?

Thats an impossible one to answer. 'Respiration' by Black Star has to be up there though

What advice would you give budding musician?

Stay true to yourself, work hard, and enjoy it!

Catch Hobaps and the rest of The Inexplicable crew at Boomtown Chapter 8 from August 11th-14th
