Teacher running in memory of friend's child

A TEACHER from Cockshutt will be counting the miles when she takes on the 2015 Virgin London Marathon.
Nikki Marsh is hoping to raise more than £3,000 for St John Ambulance by completing the 26.2 mile trek through the capital on Sunday, April 26.
The 40-year-old will be running in memory of her friend’s little boy Arthur, who passed away in September last year.
During his illness, St John Ambulance’s KIDS special ambulance unit transferred the two-year-old from hospital in Telford to the children’s intensive care unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital. “I’ve chosen to run in aid of St John Ambulance because of the support they gave my friends at a very tough time,” said Nikki.
“When I heard the sad news about Arthur it was the day after I received my ‘no’ from the London Marathon ballot, so it just seemed right to apply to run for St John Ambulance after hearing what they did for Alison and Nick.”
The St John Ambulance staff were reassuring and calming, helping to make a difficult journey from hospital in Telford to the children’s intensive care unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital much more comfortable for Arthur and his parents Alison and Nick Mullis.
Alison and Nick said they are touched that Nikki is running in Arthur’s memory and have been very supportive of her fundraising efforts.
Although she has set herself a huge target, Nikki is hoping to reach it before April, with a Jazz, Blues, Wine and Cheese evening at Nesscliffe Village Hall on Saturday, March 21 and Family Retro Evening at Cockshutt Village Hall on Saturday, April 11, which will include an 80s style tuck shop, retro games room, a disco and a raffle with prizes including tea for four people and a tour of the House of Commons courtesy of the North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson.
Nikki added: “I have run half marathons before but never a full marathon, so I have been following a training programme to be race fit for April.
“This includes four runs a week, cold baths and ice baths, so I’m hoping my dedication pays off on the day.”
