Tourism centre for Oswestry farm with 12 jobs

A COUPLE have revealed plans to build a tourism centre on their farm.

Julian and Emma Morris say their proposals to develop a tourist and visitor facility centre at Pentre Clawdd on the outskirts of Oswestry could create a dozen jobs for local people.

The land is based off the busy Gobowen Roundabout on the A5 Oswestry Bypass.
They also say the centre would be well-positioned people wishing to visit Offa’s Dyke, Watt’s Dyke and Oswestry Hillfort.

Mr Morris said: “It’s an opportunity for Oswestry and north Shropshire to create a northern gateway to the town. There’s been a lot of development on the eastern side of the work which is good but it’s only for retail and commercial, here we are trying to create something for the town’s heritage. We’re trying to create a tourism hub with a cafe, a restaurant and farm shop, as well as making it a stopping point.

“We are on a good location here, a good tourist destination, so we will have a viewing point for the hillfort, but also promote attractions like Whittington Castle that can sometimes be missed by visitors.”

Although no opening times are stating on the planning application, it does reveal four proposed full-time jobs and eight part-time on top of the two part-time positions already in place.

Also known as the Oswestry Christmas Tree Farm, the site has also recently added glamping pods to add to the holiday accommodation already available and caravan site.

Mr Morris added this new development would help those existing businesses to grow.

Last week, Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council remained neutral on the plans, stating: “While Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council supports tourist initiatives in the area the council does have concerns over the size of the proposed building and the impact that the access to the development will have on the highway as this is already a dangerous junction.”
