AN EXTENSIVE £70,000 upgrade of Oswestry’s CCTV system has started.
The town council today, Tuesday, confirmed it has signed a contract with local firm ORP for the total replacement and upgrade of the system to digital wireless.
It will mean new cameras in the town centre and new recording equipment in the CCTV control room based at Oswestry Police Station.
The local authority has also agreed to part-fund the post of CCTV co-ordinator alongside funding received by the police and crime commissioner Bill Longmore over a three-year period.
Mayor of Oswestry, Councillor John Gareth Jones, said: “The town council is delighted to be able to secure the funding for the replacement of the system. The council itself provided the original system back in 2001 and this has been hugely successful.
“We would like to place on record our thanks to Inspector Rik Klair and Jim Stafford as the CCTV co-ordinator for the considerable work that they have put into the tendering process.
“We are delighted that external funding has been provided and we thank the police and crime commissioner for not only that funding but also for his active endorsement of CCTV in Oswestry.”
A management group of the town council and West Mercia Police has now been established to oversee the installation and will meet regularly to review statistics, volunteers and wider town policing issues.
The council is also hoping to make the system self-funding and is inviting local businesses and neighbouring parish councils who want to share in the system to get in touch.
Cllr Jones added: “Our system has been a flagship that other towns have envied.
“I would like, on behalf of the council, to thank all those who have volunteered over the years. With this new investment I hope that more volunteers will come forward and be part of this wonderful community initiative.”
