Empty shops and pigeon poo are real ‘eyesores’ in Oswestry

HUNDREDS of pigeons have covered shops with poo and one councillor has had enough.

Oswestry town councillor Duncan Kerr says empty shops are a detrimental to the town, but with many shops covered in filthy pigeon mess, Mr Kerr has branded them an “eyesore”.

With the park looking so beautiful, he feels it is a shame that certain part of the shopping areas are letting the town down.

“The state of the empty shops in the town is an eyesore,” said Cllr Kerr.

“These eyesores are detrimental to the area and if it means lobbying Shropshire Council to sort the problem then we will do so.”

According to Cllr Kerr, the town centre needs investment in order to thrive.

He added: “I strongly advocate that we invest in the town centre and if that means removing empty, dirty shops, then so be it.”

The chief executive of the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, Richard Sheehan, is in agreement with Cllr Kerr that it is imperative that the issue is addressed.

He explained how filthy shops can have a serious impact on the surrounding businesses.

He said: “Shop owners are doing everything they can to ensure their shops thrive, which won’t be helped by this situation.”

Mr Sheehan concluded: “We must ensure that we do everything possible for our market towns in Shropshire to thrive.”
