Swings stolen from children's playground in Ellesmere

CHILDREN in Ellesmere will not be able to play on the swings this summer after they were stolen from the playground at Cremorne Gardens.

Described by the Mayor of Ellesmere, Alan Clarke, as “disgusting” the cradle swings were stolen.

The playground is used by hundreds of children, both locals and visitors to the town, and the callous theft has left parents furious.

Michelle Childs of Ellesmere said: “We were absolutely gutted to see the swings were gone. My little boy who is five actually started crying. He was very angry and said if he ever saw the people who took them, he would punch them.

“It’s such a shame. I can’t believe someone would do this. These swings are priceless to the children.

“I read on a sign at the park that they are hoping to replace them, but I imagine they are expensive. I just hope they can be replaced.”

The stolen swings have been valued at £1,000.

Alan Clarke added: “It’s disgusting. Unfortunately I suppose unless someone witnessed the crime, it’s unlikely that anyone will be brought to justice.

“These people should be ashamed of themselves. I’m extremely disappointed.

“Children from Ellesmere and from further afield come to enjoy the park as it is such a beautiful place. It’s very sad,” he added.

A sign informing people of the theft has been attached to the frame of the swing cradle.

It reads: “Sadly, the cradle swings that are normally here and that are enjoyed by many have been stolen. They are very expensive items and we will do our best to replace them, provided we have the funds to do so.”

West Mercia Police is investigating the theft and is encouraging anyone with information to call 101 and quote the incident number: 0402S. Alternatively, report your information anonymously through the Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
