Runaway trailer smashes into van and crushes motorcycle near Oswestry

A RUNAWAY trailer smashed into a van and crushed a motorbike on the A495 near Welsh Frankton yesterday (July 29).

The trailer, carrying bales of hay, uncoupled from a tractor being driven by a 23-year-old man and smashed into a van, trapping the driver inside.

A motorcyclist narrowly escaped serious injury by jumping clear of his bike moments before the heavy load crushed it.

Firefighters from Ellesmere were called to the accident, which happened at about 5.20pm, and freed the van driver.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "There were no life-changing or life-threatening injuries to any of the three men who were aged 23, 21 and 18."

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed an ambulance and paramedic area support officer in a rapid response vehicle attended the scene but only one man needed to be taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with minor injuries.

The road was cleared by 6pm.
