Knife campaign set for Birmingham launch

A national campaign which was the brainchild of a Shropshire-based company will shortly host the official launch of its first knife bank. 

The British Ironwork Centre, Oswestry,  created the 'Save a Life, Surrender Your Knife' initiative which will see the Centre's team embark upon a tour of UK cities to persuade young people to relinquish their weapons in exchange for a hoodie or T-shirt bearing the campaign logo.

Surrendered knives will be incorporated into a spectacular, 15-24 feet high angel sculpture which will serve as a tribute to those who have lost their lives to knife crime.

The campaign team will unveil its first knife bank to the nation's media at The Hub, Perry Barr, Birmingham on August 22 at 11am.

The knife bank is the first of a number specifically designed by the Centre for each destination on its tour of UK cities and will be personalised to the city of Birmingham. 

The event will be attended by Birmingham community leaders, police forces and the "Save a Life, Surrender Your Knife" party alongside a number of families who have been tragically affected by knife crime.

Whilst never forgetting the gravity of the topic, organisers hope that the event will be positive and a celebration of what the campaign can achieve as a result of the community, commerce and  authorities working together.

Clive Knowles, Chairman of the British Ironwork Centre, said: "The event represents the culmination of a great deal of time, effort and commitment of the working party.

"This is just the first step in what we hope will be a successful project to make our communities safer places for everyone."
