Oswestry Show promises to be a fantastic day out for all the family

WITH only just over a week to go things are gearing up for the 129th Oswestry Show.

This year’s one-day event on Saturday, August 2 will see thousands of visitors and competitors heading down to the 37-acre Park Hall Showground from both the town and around the country.

Leading the show for 2014 is this year’s president, John Jones.

Mr Jones is a well-known retired livestock auctioneer and chartered surveyor from Guilsfield near Welshpool.

On his appointment he thanked the Oswestry and District Agricultural Society for electing him as president and said how much he was looking forward to the forthcoming year.

In keeping with its traditional agricultural links there will be the usual classes for cattle, sheep, goats and rare breeds, judging takes place throughout the day in the many rings scattered around the showground. It is a wonderful place for those from the town to view the best of British, and for those from the country to catch up with friends old and new.

Oswestry always attracts a great number of horses and classes can be found for large heavy horses through to the smallest Shetland ponies.

This year the area for the children’s local pony class will be extended to 20 miles from The Cross in Oswestry. An exciting new class will also be added at 3.40pm in the main ring entitled ‘Race Horse to Riding Horse’. The class will be open to mares or geldings four years and over that have previously raced.

Spectators around the main arena can enjoy the return of The Imps Motorcycle Display Team, with their programme of daredevil jumps and routines; it is amazing to discover that the 38 young riders range in age from five to 16.

Continuing with speed, the Pony Club Mounted Games Competitors will put on a display described as fantastic, fast and fun and will no doubt leave their audience in awe of their skills.

While once again the very popular Sheep Shearing Competition will take place where competitors race against one another to shear as many sheep as possible in a limited time.

This year the show has been invited to hold a qualifying round for the 2014 Welsh Lamb Shearing Circuit, classes will be held for junior, intermediate, senior and open British competitors.
