A SUPERMARKET chain is axing 2,600 management jobs as it seeks to “simplify” and “modernise” the company.
Morrisons, which has a branch in Station Road, Oswestry, and another due to open at the Smithfield site, said a consultation process was currently taking place and it was as yet unknown how it would affect individual stores.
A spokesman for the company said the changes would modernise the way stores are managed with the aim of reducing in-store management tiers, simplifying responsibilities and improving customer service.
Some stores have seven tiers between the shop floor and store manager.
Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips said: “We know that moving to the new management structure will mean uncertainty for our colleagues and we will be supporting them through the process.”
The company has pledged to create 1,000 jobs in smaller convenience stores and an additional 3,000 in new supermarkets and will look to relocate staff to these businesses where possible.
A trial of the new management structure found it led to stronger performance and clearer lines of responsibility and more staff would be in roles where they can engage with store customers.
The changes come amid increasing pressure after the Bradford-based chain racked up an annual loss of £176 million in the year to February and recently announced a 7.1 per cent decline in quarterly sales.
