Campaigners aim to re-open Trefonen Post Office

CAMPAIGNERS are appealing for help to re-open a sorely missed village shop.
Trefonen residents Marcia Woddy and Becky Ford are urging fellow villagers to join forces in a bid to re-open the former Post Office and village shop after it was forced to close following a burglary in January.
Mrs Woddy believes the closure has left a gaping hole in the community and many people, particularly the elderly, now struggle to access the services they used to rely on.
The 41-year-old said: “The shop is sorely missed and it would be great to get it open again as a community shop because there are a lot of people in the village who did rely on it.
“There’s quite a lot of elderly people in the village who are now lost without it.
“That was the only service available in the village, it was invaluable, a big part of the community and now it’s gone.”
She claimed the owners of the building were keen to open the doors once more but so far they had not succeeded and the Post Office apologised for customers for what they called a “temporary closure”.
A spokesman said: “We are in close contact with the subpostmaster with a view to restore service as soon as possible.
“We would like to reassure local customers that we are committed to maintaining a service to the community.”
Marcia and Becky believe if the community came together they could help bring the store back to life and have already been looking for support by posting a letter and survey to every household in the village to drum up interest, generating some good feedback already.
And the positive pair have lots of ideas to help get the venture off the ground.
A meeting, open to everyone, will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, May 7, to draw up a committee and all are welcome.
Mrs Woddy continued: “I hope that if enough people come along we can take this plan forward.
“It could be a really nice hub and we've got all sorts of ideas such as a public computer with broadband for those who don't have the internet at home.”
Anyone interested in helping out or finding out more is welcome to attend the meeting at Trefonen Village Hall starting at 7.15pm.
