Backing for cyclist's 20mph fight

A BAND of volunteers will help take an Oswestry woman’s 20mph campaign forward.
Cyclist Sarah-Charlotte Peace has spent 12 months calling for the blanket speed limit to be introduced across the town centre and all residential streets.
At a public meeting held last Monday, Rod King MBE, the leader of the national 20’s Plenty For Us campaign, called on supporters to help bring the calls to fruition.
He said: “One of the best ways to move this forward is to help Sarah. If there is anyone with experience in any area it will help, even if it’s just getting out there and asking people.
“Sarah is a great driving force but she can’t do it alone.
“This campaign is fantastic, it shows how a local community can start talking about something which is then taken up by the whole community.
“I think it’s got a good chance of becoming a reality. But the council has to listen to the community which is sending out a great message to its council,” he added.
But Mr King, who said the community-led initiative only costs £1,100 per kilometre, did add that it could take up to three years to make the vision a reality.
He continued: “With motor vehicles we have been able to make the people inside them safer, but not the people on the outside.
“But this is not about stopping people from using cars, it’s about using them in a better way. It’s about sharing and where 20mph has been implemented support has gone up.”
Representatives from West Mercia Police, Oswestry Town Council and the Oswestry Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Bill Longmore, were in attendance.
Miss Peace, who had also spoke to town councillors with Mr King earlier in the day, said she was pleased with the results and would now press the four Shropshire councillors in Oswestry to take it forward at a unitary level.
She continued: “Everyone here is supportive and I’m really pleased to have the support of the PCC as well.
“It’s great to know so many people want to help and we will keep going, it’s very positive.”
