WORK to remove a controversial roundabout in Chirk was due to start this week.
The road feature on the junction of Castle Walks and the B4500 Castle Road has become the subject of a high profile campaign, in which residents called for it to be turned into a T-junction after seeing motorists travelling the wrong way around it.
Surveyors were out preparing the road earlier this month and, last week, signs appeared warning drivers of potential delays.
Councillor Terry Evans last week confirmed work was due to begin yesterday (Monday) and welcomed the progress which was finally taking place.
He said: “It has been a nightmare for many years.
“There will no doubt be big delays as the road from Glyn Ceiriog is a busy one anyway and with the doctor’s surgery being there it gets congested already.
“But the changes are going to be a huge improvement and I’m looking forward to seeing a positive change.
“The situation will also be eased once the surgery moves (to Colliery Road),” he added.
Castle Walks resident Lisa Jones was delighted by the news that work was to begin, but said motorists were, even now, struggling to navigate the junction safely.
“This is definitely good news.
“But we had a near miss just a few weeks ago.
“One of my daughter’s friends was pulling out and nearly got hit.
“We had hoped that the police station moving to the same road would help, but it hasn’t,” she added.
