Accidents in the workplace can happen at anytime to anybody. Last year over 10,000 people suffered a serious injury as a result of an accident in the workplace. Whilst you are in your workplace, you must be aware of the dangers around you. By law, there must be actions put in place by your employer to protect your health, safety and welfare in the workplace. As an employee, you must never be asked to take part in any action that is likely to cause harm or compromise your safety.

Slips, Trips and Falls
According to the
over one third of all major accidents in the workplace are a result of slips, trips and falls. This staggering figure highlights the need to take care in the areas that you walk. The majority of slips, trips and falls are caused because of wet surfaces, spillages and bad housekeeping whereby objects are left to obstruct walkers. Working at Height
Some jobs will require working at height. From cleaning windows and guttering to machine maintenance, shelf stacking and building, some jobs will require you to work at height. An employer should put procedures in place to ensure you are safe when working at height. These procedures include: Staff training, risk assessments, planning and organisation of the task and to ensure the equipment you are using is suitable and safe for the job. If you do not feel you are competent to complete a task at height you can ask your employer to train you to ensure the task is completed safely.
According to the
Work at Height Regulations 2007 Act
ensure those taking part in work at height are competent. A fall from over two metres is likely to cause serious injury such as head, back and neck trauma, fractures, soft tissue injuries, broken bones and can even result in a fatality. However, falls from heights below this can also cause minor injuries such as sprains, cuts and bruises.
Had an accident at work?
Seek medial attention – Depending on the seriousness of the accident, you may need to seek immediate medical advice and treatment if needed. The doctor will record the side effects of the injury. Even if you do not feel the injury is serious, side effects can appear days after the injury. The doctor will record the details for future reference should you wish to claim compensation or sick pay.
Report and Record – If you have an accident at work you must report it to your employer immediately. Your employer will record the details in the Accident Book and you can ask for a copy for your own records. If there is no accident book then write down the details yourself and give a copy to your employer.
