OSWESTRY Film Society is set to return next month with a controversial Oscar winner's film first up.

The programme returns on Tuesday, May 3 with Will Smith’s Oscar winning movie, King Richard, being its first screening.

The society, founded in 2015 by local film enthusiasts, has announced their 2022 summer film line-up, kicking off with the dramatisation about the tennis champions Venus and Serena William’s father, Richard.

Oswestry Film Society will be screening movies at the Oswestry community centre’s theatre, Kinokulture, on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

This summer season brings drama, comedy and more with movies from all over the world, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, the US, and Israel.

Michael Hudson, from the society, said: “Our summer season has an emphasis on life stories both real and fictional.

Titles such as The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Victorian painter, and the Irish drama Herself, which shows the struggles of an abused woman who rebuilds her life from scratch by building her own home, will grace the Kinokulture screens.

After the seven screenings, the society will end the season with the 2002 comedy-thriller: Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, starring a bunch of A-list celebrities “in the possibly true story”, such as George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Michael added: “We’re picking up where we left off back in March 2020 with our ever-popular season tickets available once again.

"Although we subsidised our ticket prices during Covid, we’ve unfortunately had to increase them to help cover costs, but anyone signing up for all eight films in the season can buy a season ticket that works out at just £5 a film.”

The society is run by volunteers on a non-profit basis in partnership with Kinokulture, but they run separately from the Oswestry’s community cinema.

All their profit going into booking movies and venue overheads.

Tickets are £5-6.50 and you can find more information about the new season, watch trailers and buy tickets at www.oswestryfilmsociety.com
