A TASKFORCE is being set up to look at safety on Shropshire roads.

Councillors will look at how road safety can be improved, as well as scrutinising any proposed approaches.

They will also be asked to uncover potential new funding methods.

It comes after the average number of people killed or seriously injured on Shropshire roads in the last three years increased from just over 160 – figures previously seen 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, further moves have been made to introduce 20mph limits in built up areas

Scrutiny committee officer Danial Webb said: “A failure to ensure effective road safety could result in a higher number of injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic collisions.

“A fear of road danger may result in people choosing to walk or cycle less, resulting in poorer health outcomes.”

As part of their work, councillors will look at how they can work with West Mercia Police to reduce the number of road traffic collisions, and different ways to reduce the number.

They will also review the nature of all road traffic collisions including travel mode and highway conditions, the impact of road traffic collisions including treatment cost, and the feelings of safety when walking and cycling.

The group will meet for three sessions before reporting back to the performance management scrutiny committee in March 2019.

The committee will discuss details of the group’s work when they meet next Wednesday (October 24) ahead of the taskforce starting its work.

They will also scrutinise the annual Customer Feedback Report and consider the nature of complaints, compliments and comments, as well as Corporate Performance and Financial Monitoring for the first quarter of 2018/19.

The agenda also includes an interim report of the taskforce set up to look at the council’s financial strategy and Innovation and Income, ahead of developing the budget for 2019/20.
