Crewe Alexandra have confirmed that former Whitchurch Alport joint manager Carl Everall is suspended by the club over a safeguarding issue that has been referred to police.

Mr Everall left Yockings Park 14 months ago to take up a full-time role with Crewe as their head of foundation.

The Guardian newspaper has reported on Wednesday that he was suspended from all footballing activities by the club following allegations about his behaviour, with Crewe notifying the Football Association of their decision.

But they have announced the safeguarding issue is not related to his work at Gresty Road.

In a statement, the club said: "Crewe Alexandra Football Club can confirm that youth coach Carl Everall has been suspended.

"The reason for this suspension relates to a safeguarding issue which is totally unconnected with his role at Crewe Alexandra.

"The club also reaffirm that, as soon as it was made aware of the issue, it was dealt with immediately and the relevant and appropriate procedures were followed.

"It is not appropriate for the club to comment further."

The FA also confirmed it has received notice of the suspension, but also declined to make further comment.

“This is a safeguarding and police matter so therefore the FA is not in a position to comment,” an FA spokesman said.

Whitchurch Alport also declined to comment.
