Wythenshawe Town 5

Ellesmere Rangers 1

Ellesmere Rangers are still yet to claim a league victory this season after they were beaten 5-1 by mid-table side Wythenshawe Town.

Rangers came into the game on the back of a 3-1 loss at Sandbach United, and were away again at a side that hadn’t played in two weeks.

There was no sign of rust for the hosts after they were able to take an early lead over Rangers in an impressive first half display.

Ellesmere were able to keep the score at 1-0 until the second half, before Wythenshawe put the game beyond doubt, scoring five goals without reply.

The opening few minutes saw Rangers on the front foot and with an opportunity to take the lead after just five minutes.

A cleared corner was pumped back into the box where Gerardo Fernandez’s close-range strike was stopped by goalkeeper Jake Aldred.

Town grabbed the opening goal of the game when the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts, which was put into the net by Grant Spencer.

There were no more goals during the opening half, however Wythenshawe’s well-rested side started to perform at their best.

They went 2-0 up in the 51st minute when Liam Crellin-Myers headed home at the near post.

Two minutes later Rangers found themselves 3-0 down when Ste Yarwood was on hand to bundle home a parried save.

A long-range effort from Brad Byrne on the right of the penalty area found the net for their fourth of the afternoon, before Ben Steer grabbed their fifth of the afternoon in the 85th minute.

Rangers found the net with minutes left to play for a consolation goal through Anwar Olugbon who scored from close-range.

Ellesmere Rangers next face Stockport Town away on Saturday in the first round of the Macron Cup.
