Oswestry Sports Forum hosted another expert talk as part of their Good to Great initiative.

Held at Oswestry Rugby Club last Friday evening, youngsters who went along were given a talk about sports nutrition from expert Rachael Handley.

Rachael is a sports nutritionist from Whitchurch who completed her masters course at Loughborough University.

She is also a Shropshire swimming record holder and has represented Great Britain in the modern pentathlon.

More than 50 sporty youngsters from the area were in attendance to learn more about nutrition.

The Good to Great initiative was introduced by the Sports Forum to educate younger people in the area competing at sport on issues that they don’t often get enough information about.

Stuart Manford of Oswestry came up with the idea for the initiative.

He said: “The Good to Great initiative aims to provide free help and guidance to kids locally.

“I remember when I used to swim when I was younger – outside of my club, there wasn’t really much support.

“With this initiative I wanted to give kids in the area the opportunity to have that extra guidance.”

This is the third expert talk that the initiative has organised, with a fourth expected in February.

Stuart said: “The talk went really well – it was very enjoyable for all the kids.

“Rachel was a great expert speaker.

“The age of the youngsters who attend ranges from 13 to 17, so when it comes to the scientific explanations of things it can sometimes be difficult to put things in a way it can be understood by everyone there, but Rachael got it spot on.”

Along with the talk, the evening also featured a raffle with prizes given out.

Stuart added: “The night was great – we’d like to thank the Meat Man and Pen-y-Dyffryn hotel for donated prizes for the raffle.

“We’d also like to thank Oswestry Rugby Club for letting us join the venue.

“We extend a huge thanks to Rachael, who gave the talk free of charge and in her own time, which we are really grateful for.”
