NEIL Hamilton, UKIP Leader in Wales and AM for Mid and West Wales, is supporting an initiative to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Mr Hamilton, Party Spokesman for Culture, is backing the innovative Know Your Lemons campaign during #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth.

Mr Hamilton said: “This is an eye-catching initiative which I am pleased to support. Breast cancer affects both men and women and it is vital that everyone is aware of the 12 warning signs of the disease and check themselves regularly.

“Breast cancer is still the most common cancer for women, with around 55,000 people diagnosed each year. By recognising the signs, the cancer can be spotted and diagnosed early which can make all the difference.

“Every October Tenovus Cancer Care raises awareness and money for this cause and I am proud to help spread the word in my Region.

“Anyone who has any concerns should get themselves checked immediately. Better be safe than sorry.”

Tenovus Cancer Care has a long history of funding research into breast cancer. Back in 1975, scientists at the Tenovus Institute for Cancer Research were among the first to show that Tamoxifen was actually highly effective at stopping the growth of breast cancer cells. Since then, Tamoxifen has gone on to be the most successful and widely used breast cancer drug in the world, saving the lives of millions of women.

In the last 10 years, they have invested over £450,000 into breast cancer research and continue to fund innovative projects.

This year, the charity is working with the NHS and worldwide Breast Cancer’s Know Your Lemons campaign highlighting 12 signs to look out for, using lemons.

The signs are:-

• feeling a thick area

• dimple

• nipple crust

• red or hot

• unexpected fluid

• skin sores

• bump

• growing vein

• sunken nipple

• new shape/size

• orange peel skin

• hard lump

If you worried or notice any of the symptoms above, then it is worth making an appointment to see your doctor and seek medical advice.
