Chris Hughes's Newtown endured injury time heartbreak after a last minute own goal from Joe Kenton denied them a point in a narrow 3-2 defeat at Bala last night.

With Storm Callum blasting through North Wales to create a difficult night for football at Maes Tegid, the Robins thought they'd done enough for a point after Neil Mitchell slotted home from the penalty spot and substitute Luke Boundford headed an equaliser with five minutes to go after Chris Venables brace had put the home side in the driving seat.

Newtown had to dig in after being reduced to ten men midway through the second half - captain Craig Williams seeing red for the second time this season after picking up two yellows for late tackles.

But their hard work was undone after a slip in the 94th minute from Ben Bailey allowed Bala's Henry Jones in behind the Newtown defence, and his low cross was deflected home by Kenton under pressure from Venables.

Boss Hughes said it was a "gut-wrenching" way to lose, but said he would be taking the positives after an impressive display against the highly-fancied Lakesiders.

"Eleven v eleven I thought we were on the front foot and on top in second half, and the red card changed the game," he said.

"We battled back with a great goal, then sat in and try to see it out but a moment at the end cost us.”

"It isn’t all doom and gloom, we ran a really top side close tonight and deserved a point. We will take the positives, despite it being gut wrenching".
