A MAN is set to go wild in the aisles of a supermarket after winning a charity competition.

David Hayes, 56, set up the competition for a 90 second trolley dash at Stans Superstore in St Martins in aid of Nightingale House Hospice.

The winner of the trolley dash - which raised more than £700 - is Bryn Jones, of Rhos near Wrexham.

Mr Hayes, of St Martins, is fundraising for the Nightingale House in memory of his wife Joan, who stayed at the hospice in the weeks before her death from cancer aged 68 on October 27 last year.

He was full of praise for the care Mrs Hayes received at the Wrexham hospice.

He added: "Obviously they gave my wife fantastic care. She wanted no flowers at the funeral - she wanted all the money to go in donations to the hospice, which is what happened.

"But the hospice also looked after the family, so I'm still being supported and talked to and looked after.

"That's the amazing thing, so I kind of wanted to give something back."

Mr Hayes, who also had a fundraising stall at the Ifton Meadows Nature Day, is one of 25 people who are taking on a trek along the Great Wall of China from October 19-27.

Mrs Hayes, originally of Kent, came to Shropshire in 1988 as a single parent with a young daughter Jo.

To support the family and be around for Jo on the school run, Joan started Whixall Wood Furniture, which became JA Milton Upholstery Supplies, which celebrates it 30th anniversary next year.

After buying and selling from auctions, she learnt upholstery and became so proficient, Joan ended up teaching in Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Market Drayton colleges.

The business moved to Whitchurch in the 90s and in early 2000 to its current home in Ellesmere.

Mr Hayes will pay tribute to his wife on the final day of the trek by placing one of the limited edition medals being for the Ifton Colliery in a section of the wall which is being renovated.

Christine Dukes, a fundraiser for Nightingale House, said that the 25 walkers had so far raised £60,000 with various activities.

A bicycle ride from Vietnam to Cambodia will be held next year as a result of the China trek's fundraising success.

Mr Hayes has raised nearly £2,000 for the hospice through an online donation page.
