A mid-Wales restaurant has retained it's coveted star after being named in the 2019 edition of the Michelin Guide.

Ynyshir, near Machynlleth, is one of only seven in Wales to have been given the accolade.

Under the management of Chef Owner Gareth Ward, Ynyshir was also voted top restaurant in Wales and 5th best in the United Kingdom in this year's good food guide.

The premises was completely revamped in 2016, with a £500,000 kitchen installed.

Michelin stars are considered to be the 'Oscars' of the food industry and the 2019 results were announced last week via a Facebook Live broadcast.

Elsewhere in Mid-Wales Montgomeryshire's Michelin starred restaurant The Checkers, Montgomery, also retained it's star, despite asking to give it back last month due to chef Stéphane Borie stepping out of the kitchen to work for private clients this year.

The business is set to be relaunched as 'Checkers Pantry' later this year, open for coffee, cakes, breakfasts and lunches but not dinner, while the Bed and breakfast accommodation side of the business is set to continue unaffected.

"The call to Michelin was a tough one, and of course tinged with sadness," they said in a statement last week.

"Our star has been treasured for 7 years and to be in effect handing it back was huge.

"But things change, and change is exciting. We can’t wait to open The Checkers up to many more guests and to enjoy far fewer late evenings."
