A FLOOD warning is in place at Rivacre Brook, Great Sutton, following hours of torrential rainfall in the area today (Thursday, September 20).

The Government's flood warning information service has a statement on its website which reads: "Persistent rain is forecast to continue into this evening and into the early hours of Friday.

"Water levels are rising rapidly in Rivacre Brook at Great Sutton near Ellesmere Port. The flood warning level is expected to be reached at 5.30pm today (Thursday).

"Our operations teams are active in this area clearing grids.

"Be aware of your local surroundings and remain safe. We will continue to monitor and will update this message as the situation develops."

The heavy rainfall has caused disruption on rail and roads on Thursday afternoon, while high winds are expected at Storm Bronagh passes through the region.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: "We are taking several reports of accidents across the network due to the downpour of rain.

"If you are setting off please take your time and alter your driving accordingly to the weather conditions.

"Don't forget #lightson #slowdown"

Merseyrail informed passengers on Twitter: "Due to the severe weather conditions expected this evening, Network Rail have imposed speed restrictions across our network for safety reasons.

"As a result, some delays are expected, we advise passengers to keep checking our website or Twitter for the latest updates."

Arriva Trains Wales has also informed passengers there will be speed restrictions on its services from 5pm today until 7am tomorrow (Friday), between Chester and Warrington, as well as between Chester and Wrexham.
