GCSE courses for above school age learners will be provided in a town following the controversial closure of its college.

HWB Dinbych will be hosting GCSE courses run by Coleg Llandrillo in English, mathematics and astronomy for the first time for the upcoming academic year following the closure of Denbigh Community College.

The college's closure earlier this summer was deemed necessary by Coleg Llandrillo due to a fall in the population of 16 to 19-year-olds and the rising costs of course provision against a stagnant public sector.

Coleg Llandrillo also said an increase in the popularity of apprenticeships was a factor in its decision.

The closure sparked significant opposition across the Denbigh community with a petition that received 2,000 signatures, which was backed by Chris Ruane, MP for the Vale of Clwyd and Ann Jones, AM for North Wales.

The college provided a range of courses that will not be on offer at the HWB Dinbych this year, such as music technology, health and social care, and art and design, for which students will be required to travel to Rhyl and Rhos-on-Sea.

Lawrence Wood, principal of Coleg Llandrillo, said: "The GCSE provision at HWB Dinbych shows our commitment to provide adults in Denbigh with part-time courses.

“I am delighted with this year’s GCSE results, where 86% of part-time adult learners from Denbigh achieved the "gold standard" A*-C, 40% above the average in Wales which is excellent.”

The college also offers an extensive range of part-time courses at the HWB, many of which are free. This includes basic skills, computing, creative arts, languages, skills for work, introduction to teaching assistants, and counselling.
